Making Life Easier...One White Sock at a Time

Laundry. It's never-ending. But a laundry basket full of white socks? Dreadful.

Not my favorite way to spend my time.

And where did that missing sock go anyway? M-I-A.

So in an age of automatic bill paying, electronic can openers, and renewing my library books online, I figured there's got to be a more productive way to sort a household of 6's socks.

My solution? A little contraption that has been around since 1849. The safety pin.

I've got a little basket of them by the laundry area and I heavily persuade my children to "pin up" their socks before throwing them into the dirty clothes. The socks then go through the washer AND dryer while still being pinned together.

The result? Matched socks. Speedy finish. Happy mommy. :)

What is a tip that makes your life easier? I'd love to hear!

  1. My brother in law does this as well! In fact, he just leaves the safety pin in on of the socks! :)

  2. I used to have a little round thing called a sock lock. I'd put them on each of the kids socks and I never lost socks. Gradually they all broke and I never could find any more to replace them. They were the best invention ever!! When they were babies I used a mesh lingerie bag to put them all in and wash them. Now I just use the mesh bags to wash my grandbabies socks she leaves here (she won't keep anything on her feet!). I love the safety pin idea.

  3. Great idea!
If I did that, then I wouldn't have the need for my area in the laundry room called Lost Socks... I have those words spelled out with clothespins attached to them and I clip the missing socks on there.

Some have been on there for nearly a year...

  4. Now if we could just figure out a way to keep up with those sippy cup stoppers :)

  5. You can use plastic milk rings to keep the socks together. They were what the sock locks were patterned after and they are free.

I have bought the mesh bags at Target in different colors and had each one put their socks and undies (3 girls visiting for the summer all around the same size get confusing) in their own mesh bag by color to help out. If you can't find the colors you want, dye with Kool-Aid, you already know that it doesn't wash out. Or popsicles.

  6. Good idea! Easy too-right up my alley. I like the different color mesh bag idea too. Right now, my socks aren't too bad because everyone's feet are different sizes but I'm sure in a few years, it'll be crazy.

  7. Good tip! I always roll all of our socks together before throwing them in the dirty clothes, but that doesn't really help when you go to fold 196646754 clean white socks, huh? :s

  10. You know I never thought of that, and I hate matching socks when the laundry is done! Such a good tip!

  11. Love this tip! It's one of those 'why didn't I think of that' moments. Matching up socks is one of my least favorite tasks. Thanks!
