Those are 3 things that come to my mind when I think about the women who surround me, such as yourselves. Day in and day out, you are giving so much to your families. And with Mother's Day just around the corner, I think it's time to celebrate you.
Last year at this time, I discovered a most wonderful picture book at my local bookstore. What was it? Mom Says I Can by Judy Cooley. The title caught my attention right away. The illustration on the cover had me wanting to find out more. Take a look.
I love this book so much, that I wanted to share with all of you more about it. And so I wrote to the author and even had the wonderful opportunity of being able to speak with her on the phone yesterday. I wanted to ask her more about the inspiration behind this most beautiful book in hopes that we can all learn something from her both as a mother, writer, & illustrator.
With her permission, I'd like to share with you some of the magnificient paintings that I know will just capture your heart.
I asked Judy about how she first got started as an illustrator. I found it so intriguing to hear that she actually did most of her paintings while her children were young. She realized that after having her first baby, it was also important to do something for herself. And so her dear husband purchased her some watercolor lessons because he knew how much she enjoyed art. Isn't that wonderful? So what started out as a hobby, then grew. She found a mentor who could offer her constructive criticism, opened up a little art show in her own home with about 40 different paintings, and it went from there. OK, tell me that isn't just amazing. I LOVE A GREAT SUCCESS STORY. LOVE IT.
I asked Judy about what painting from the book was her most favorite and why. She shared that after working on 10 different paintings, she was not pleased with what she had done. She was in a rut. She then called her publisher and said, "I'm going to need another year." Judy saved up her pennies & went to Italy to study some more there. She came home and scrapped EVERYTHING. She started over. Her first painting was the boy in the box. While painting it just came back to her, "I really DO love to paint."
For any of you out there who've ever had to deal with your little "models" not cooperating when you want to take a picture, you will relate very well to this. Before painting, she would take photographs of the little boy she was modeling the book after. Dressed in a variety of costumes and having to strike certain poses...well, I'm sure you can all imagine. Who else has a 3-year-old out there? :) She told me that most of his pictures were actually taken with a mouth full of Skittles! I said, "What a lucky little boy to have himself portrayed throughout the book!" Judy responded, "I don't think he felt lucky at all!" And don't you dare say he was cute. He would respond, "I'm not cute, I'm cool!" And so it goes, that in the book you'll read, "...But today, I'm super cool Max." :)These are just a few of the illustrations from this beloved book. The storyline is very special as well, and as you read it with your child, you can't help but just want to cuddle in together as you read about Max and his mommy.
And finally, I asked Judy about what her best advice would be to moms out there. She simply said, "Play more." I think that couldn't be more perfectly said. It's so true. Our little ones grow up way too fast!
Thank you, Judy, for taking the time to share with me more about this book, and even more...about YOU! What an inspiration!

Kris - "Play more." Powerful words. This is going to be my new mantra. What a beautiful book and a beautiful story about the making of it! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMy mom taught me a lot about being independent - though I didn't realize it at the same. Being Japanese, marrying my dad and moving to a foreign country (USA) and learning to live in a society totally different from her own...at times I think I have it tough and then I think back to what she did....she was so brave. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a stalker. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspirationsal read. I needed that! My little onnes mean the world to me. It would be a blessing to me to know that they feel like I am their #1 fan, supportive in everyway. I want them to know that their mom thinks they can do it all...and they can, with God's grace :) Thanks again Kris, I'll be on the lookout for this one!
ReplyDeleteMy mom taught me to be courageous! Funny story about going up to the counter at McDonalds to ask for ketchup, but hey, it took alot of courage at 6 years old!
ReplyDeleteI love the beautiful watercolor illustrations. My favorite is the Radio Flyer pirate!

ReplyDeleteWow! I am so in love with this book!
ReplyDeleteLike you, just the cover got me! What a perfect title and illustration!
I LOVED hearing about the author and what she had to go through and overcome to get to were she is! So inspiring and so humble!
The illustrations are absolutely AMAZING! Seriously, they are just perfect!
We have taken more than a few pictures with "treats" in our hands (or mouths!!!), so I totally understand that! :)
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful find!
My Mom was amazing! I remember being told over and over, "You can do anything you put your mind to do!". She gave us such a confidence boost in everything we did. And, you could always count on her being our biggest cheerleader in what ever we were "in to" at the moment!
ReplyDeleteWe were so blessed!
Of course, I'm a follower! :)
ReplyDeleteI love the interview, it is so true! My favorite picture is the little boy flying in the box, I can see my brother as a small child in that painting.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower! :)
ReplyDeleteMy Mom did the best she could as a single mother but she didn't have much time for us, so it has helped me to see just how precious my time as a SAHM is and that I need to cherish it and make the most of each day. I don't think I would have that perspective without her and now she is a fab grandma.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful paintings!!! Made me want a little boy. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Those are beautiful paintings. I'm always amazed at people who have that talent.

ReplyDeleteLet me tell you about my Mom.... no... that would take too long. She is the best Mom ever. I think the best thing she did for us five kids... was to teach us to trust our own instincts and to have confidence in ourselves. Teaching us those two things gave us all the encouragement we needed.
ReplyDeleteI love my Mom!
This makes me miss my baby boy. He's 22 now. But still has a wonderful sense of fun and adventure. I'm going to go and call him right now!
ReplyDeleteKris, this is a darling book, and I happen to have it myself a well! How great that you had the opportunity to speak with the author. I, too, love a success story! I had to laugh when she said her little guy said, "I'm not cute. I'm cool", because those are the exact words my own little guy would say to us at that age! Too funny! (you don't need to put me in the drawing, as I have the book--I just wanted to chat with you!)
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I love finding new GREAT children's books. This book reminds me of my two little boys. They could spend all day doing nothing but dressing up in different costumes. I have more than once thought that I should just chuck all of their toys except their dress up box, I don't think they would even notice. I am so inspired by her story. I love art as a hobby, reading her story makes me want to go out and sign up for a class. I really want to delve into art again for myself.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely inspired by these paintings and the concept behind the book. I love the part that she shared with us about playing more with our kids. A reminder I need often!!
ReplyDeleteMy mom is amazing! She always said that if we had the intentions and heart, then we could do it. It may not always turn out like we envisioned it, but she was ALWAYS behind us in everything we did.

ReplyDeleteThat book is adorable. My son has 2 drawers full of costumes and a wonderful imagination. "Play more" will forever be with me, what powerful words.

ReplyDeleteI teach kindergarten. This would be great for my classroom. I can already see so many ways to extend it!!
ReplyDeleteWith the downshifting of the curriculum, even in kindergarten - I wish I could make the administrators see the value in "Play more."

Beautiful book. I needed this I push my child to work more and play less maybe I should play a little more.
ReplyDeleteI would love to read it!
ReplyDeleteI think that Judy went to Italy for a kind of retreat when she thought things weren't working the way she wanted with her book. And when she returned she scrapped everything and started over. This is so cool!

I was an only child so had no siblings to compete with. My Mom put a lot of energy and time into raising me and was a SAHM. She recently passed away at 90 1/2 years old. She was a wonderful mother!

ReplyDeleteThat book just looks so sweet! It really reminds me of my sweet little boy who is going to be 2 in just a couple of weeks.
ReplyDeleteThe book reminds of the books that I read as a child. My mother always made sure that I read nightly. I love to read to this day, and I know my Mom is to thank for that. :)
